Currie, Clement, Johnston Family Biographies
Robert Clement 1793-?

Born:

October 1793 , fourth son and fifth of 15 children to Alexander Clement and Grizel Allan, in the parish of Balmaclellan, Kircudbrightshire. Christened at Balmaclellan Parish Church (Church of Scotland) on 30 October 1793.

Life:

Married Agnes Tait of Machermore farm in the parish of Minnigaff on 30th May 1819. They had a son, John b 1820 and daughter Mary (OPR), and possibly Agnes and Jean (from census records). Strong evidence that Robert was also father to Janet Mair, née Clement ("cousin Janet" from the diary), who was married to Matthew Mair, draper and tea dealer, from Mauchline Ayrshire. They lived in Southampton where Janet is buried. Her burial is recorded as taking place on 8.12.1863, age 48 years. This compares with the transcription from the grave in Balmaclellan "...also Janet his daughter who died 5th December 1863 aged 48 years".

In the 1841 census, Robert was toll-keeper at Corsock, and in 1851 toll-keeper in Clatteringshaws. (The right to collect Tolls were auctioned off very few years or so until an act of parliament making the roads free for all.)

Died:

14th Nov 1869, age 76, at Balmaclellan. Gravestone at Balmaclellan:
