| John Corrie or Currie 1791-1874 | |
Born: 1791 John Corrie , b Mar 17, bapt Mar 20, eighth child and fifth son of William Corrie, tenant farmer at Hollows, Torthorwald, and Margaret Kirkpatrick. The second 'John' after the first one died as an infant in 1784. Probably called after his uncle John, Margaret's brother. Life: Left £50 and furniture (shared with brother Thomas) by his uncle John Kirkpatrick, farmer of Parkside, in his 1819 will. The 1851 Scotland census shows a John Currie, farmer, age 58 living with wife Catherine Crosbie 54, son James 24, farmer, and daughter Margaret 21, all living at East Barclay, Colvend. Also James C (nephew of John) 21 from England, learning farming, and servant Mary Kennedy 17. These could be John, brother of JCC, and "Cousin Margaret" (Margaret writes from Barclay Colvend in 1896). The nephew could be Alexander's brother James Charters visiting his cousins to learn farming. (He went on to live in Australia and work on a sheep station). Died: Died in Colvend, where he had lived most of his adult life, age 83. Left a will. John Currie d Barclay 9 th Dec 1874 in his 84 th year |
