Currie, Clement, Johnston Family Biographies
Jane Eleonora Clement 1813-1894

Born:

May 1813, sixth daughter and youngest of 15 children of Alexander Clement and Grizell Allan, in the parish of Balmaclellan, Kircudbrightshire. Christened at Balmaclellan Parish Church (Church of Scotland) on 18 May 1813.

Life:

Probably called after Jane Eleonora Thomson, the 12 year old daughter of the Revd James Thomson, minister of Balmaclellan. (I happened to notice the name in the deaths register - she died on 13 June 1822, age 21)

On 14 Sep 1830, she gave birth to an illegitimate son by James McLellan, called David Clement McLellan (later called himself David CLEMENT). She was just 17.

Later on married James Gordon, a cartwright, and lived with him in Balmaclellan and later Village of Gatehouse, Girthon, where she had 8 children - Peter 1834, Mary 1836, James 1838, Alexander 1840, Thomas 1846, William Denniston 1846, Robert 1849 and John 1852. Her son David was living with the family at the time of the 1851 census, as was her mother, now widowed and in her 80s, Grace (previously Grizel) Clement.

Her husband, now a joiner, died in 1855, but Jane must have been well enough off as she had her own house in Chapleton, Borgue, in 1881, where she was near to her son James, a master joiner, and his family business.

Died:

1 May 1894, aged 81, died of pleuritis (?) and was buried in Old Girthon cemetery.

In memory of James GORDON died Gatehouse 19th August 1855, age 45, by his widow Jane E O T CLEMENT, 1st May 1894, age 81.
Son Alex died in infancy, John died 29th Nov 1856 age 4 years, son William died Galston Village 15th December 1906 age 61.

Note: son Alexander is age 10 in the 1851 census, puzzling?
