| Grizel Allan 1767-1854 | |
Born: Christened on 20 Apr 1767 at Troqueer Parish Church, Kirkcudbright, daughter of William Allan, weaver, and Margaret McMillan. Second daughter of 3 - Janet christened 23 March 1762 and Jean 13th May 1770. We know that she died in 1854 at "a great age" so that birth date would make her 87. Life: Married to Alexander Clement, a farmer, in June 1786. Lived in the parish of Balmaclellan where children were christened. Had 16 children, 11 survived (according to son-in-law James Charters Currie's diary) between 1787 and 1813. The birth date above would make her first child at age 19 and the last at 46 (!) We know of 15 children - William, Janet, John (d age 33), Jacob (d age 6), Robert, twins James and Mary (d age 1), Jacob 2 (d age 46), Matthew, Mary2 (d infant), Rosanna, David (d age 7), Alexander (d age 20), Margaret and Jane Eleonora. Husband Alexander died in the 1820s. In 1851 she is living with daughter Jane (Jean) and husband James Gordon in Gatehouse, Girthon. She is registered as a pauper/farmer. However, she returned to Townhead, just North of Balmaclellan to end her days there. Died: 1854, at a great age, from JCC's diary. In the parish register: "27 Nov 1854 Grizzel Allan, widow of Alexander Clement, late of Townhead, died 27th November at Balmaclellan village, aged 92". Age given is too old. (JCC estimated her to be "about 84" in 1850. Birth date says she was 87). Not engraved on the family table stone in Balmaclellan Kirkyard. |
