| Alexander Johnston 1819-1900 | |
Born: 7 Nov 1819 in Leslie Fife, second son of John Johnston and Janet Oswald. Life: Emigrated to Ontario in Canada before 1857. Probably met his wife there. She was Martha Linton, born Ireland in Mar 1827. They had at least 5 children, Alexander B, born 1857, Loudin or Lowden, born 7 Jan 1859, Jessie, born 1861, James L born 1863 and Mary A born 1869. Likely to have been a first daughter too - Martha Ann. Lived as a farmer in Fournier Ontario, which seems to be called South Plantagenet, Prescott County now. In the 1881 Canada census Alexander 24 and James L 18 are school teachers. Loudin 22 is down as a farmer. 2 girls, Jessie 20 and Mary A 12. Later on Alexander becomes a Methodist minister and James L a doctor. Lowden was still living in South Plantagenet in 1901 with wife Chrestin (?) and adopted son George (born in Scotland), age 14. In the 1911 census record he is still a farmer, living with second wife Stella, 42, son Douglas and daughter Wilma, plus the brother of his wife, age 21, Wm Dalwin (?) age 21 emigrated from Scotland in 1909. Died: Aug 1900 in South Plantagenet age 80. He was buried in August 1900 in United Cemetery, Riceville, South Plantagenet, Prescott, Ontario along with wife Martha (died 4 Feb 1892 age 64), son James L (now a doctor, died 20 Dec 1911 age 49) and granddaughter Winogene, daughter of his son Rev A B Johnston (born 16 Sep 1890, died 29 Apr 1906, age 15). |
